Increasing “P” Marks in a Studied Poetry Response

Here is a very useful exercise which can be used for the following:

To scaffold notes on a poet

To revise poetry and retrieve previously learned knowledge

To work on increasing “Clarity of Purpose” marks

Begin with this document:

Using your notes (or notes on this site), create a section for each poem you study. There is no question in mind, these are generic notes to aid your comprehension of the poetry.

Once this is complete, move to this document and make a copy. I have completed the beginning and added an introduction as I now have a specific question in mind. The idea here is to edit the notes to answer a specific exam question. I have inserted red text to show engagement with the question and how I can turn generic notes into a more task-focused response.

Once finished, make another copy of the document. This time, edit it again to suit a different question on Dickinson. You do not need to rewrite your entire response, but you need to edit it to ensure you remove any unnecessary detail and especially work on adding detail that demonstrates engagement with the question. Once more, insert this in red text. The first poem and an introduction is done for you.

A good idea would be to practice this with 2-3 poems from a poet and with 3 different exam questions.
